Education and Early Years

What is T-Level Education and Childcare?

You will complete a Level 3 Technical Qualification in Education and Childcare with an occupational specialism focusing on Early Years in year two. This aims to develop your knowledge in building relationships with children and young people to support and promote their learning and development.

Included alongside the technical qualification is the completion of an industrial placement each week, working with children in nursery and/or school in reception class. The industry placement enables students to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and behaviours to work successfully in this industry and be work-ready at the end of the course. 

On successful completion of the T-Level, you will be awarded a Level 3 license to practice as an Early Years Practitioner.

What Will You Study on the Education and Early Years T-Level?

In year one you will study 12 elements of core knowledge inclusive of:

  • The wider education context
  • Child development
  • Supporting education
  • Safeguarding health and well-being
  • Behaviour
  • Observation and assessment
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Special educational needs and disability
  • English as an additional language
  • Parents families and carers
  • Working with others
  • Reflective practice

This is supported by a package of employability and enrichment opportunities to strengthen the core knowledge, skills and behaviours developed during your studies.

In year two you will focus on the completion of an occupational specialism within Early Years Education and Childcare. This aims to develop the knowledge and skills that are required to enter into the workplace as a competent practitioner or for further study. It aims to deepen the core knowledge developed in year one in application to practice within the early year’s sector.

Students will need to purchase a DBS and polo shirt to wear on placement

What Next after Completing T-Level Education and Childcare?

There are three main progression routes following the completion of T-Levels. Following the completion of the T-Level in Education and Early Years, you may go on to:

Skilled employment within the education and early years sector inclusive of roles as a teaching assistant, early years practitioner in a nursery or pre-school or within education roles such as a learning mentor.

Higher Level apprenticeships at Level 4 and above which may progress you into careers such as an assessor in education.

Higher Education as UCAS points have been awarded to T-Levels, progression routes onto Higher Educational pathways include education and early years relevant Foundation Degrees and Degrees such as teaching, youth work and early years studies.

What is the Exam Board for T-Level Education and Childcare?

NCFE

Assessment is via two exams at  the end of Y12 (core A and core B), plus an employer set project (ESP) which focuses on planning and assessment in relation to a case study in exam conditions.

In Y13 are three controlled assessments under exam conditions, and one assessment, which is 50% towards your Occupational Specialism is through structured observations in the industrial placement where the college assessor will come out to observe you working and interacting with the children.

What are the Entry Requirements for T-Level Childcare and Education?

At least two 5s and three 4s at GCSE including at least a 4 in English Language and Maths.


NOTE: Completion of a Disclosure and Barring Service Application (DBS) is compulsory as gaining work experience with a range of vulnerable client groups is an essential requirement of this course.
