What is A-Level Textiles?

A-Level Textiles is an art-based course where you’ll explore and experiment with a wide range of creative techniques. From fabric manipulation to surface decoration, this course encourages you to push boundaries and develop innovative designs.

Textiles is a highly versatile subject, blending fashion, art and design to create functional or expressive works. You’ll explore various materials and processes, gaining hands-on experience while developing a sounder understanding of the role textiles play in culture, fashion and everyday life.

What Will You Study in A-Level Textiles?

A-Level Textiles – AQA Specification
Course Overview:
This creative and hands-on course encourages students to explore a wide range of textile techniques and processes. It blends traditional craftsmanship with innovative and digital methods to develop both technical skills and artistic expression.

  • Garment construction
  • Practical Skills Development:
  • Hand and machine embroidery
  • Screen and sublimation printing
  • Disperse dyeing and felt making

  • Textile manipulation and use of dissolvable fabric
  • Devore and other experimental print techniques

Equipment:
An essential equipment list is issued at the start of the year. The Art Department offers an approved Art Pack via a partner supplier at a discounted rate for student convenience.

What Next after Completing A-Level Textiles?

After completing the Textiles A-Level course, many of our students decide to carry on their studies with a one-year UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at our college. Some of our students progress directly to university.

What is the Exam Board for A-Level Textiles?

Our Textiles A-Level programme is assessed by the AQA exam board. They are the leading exam board, making sure students are well-prepared for both higher education and professional opportunities in the creative industries. 

What are the Entry Requirements for A-Level Textiles?

To enrol in A-Level Textiles, you will need at least five GCSEs at grade 5 or above. This includes a grade 5 in GCSE Art or GCSE Textiles.

Students from Design Technology or Graphic Design backgrounds may also apply. However, they will be required to attend an interview and present a portfolio of their work.

At Cardinal Newman, we’re proud to offer a Mixed Programme option. This means students can combine A-Levels with BTECs. This flexible pathway is designed for those who may not be on track for five grade 5s but still want to pursue both qualifications.
