All three of these issues are topics covered in the A-Level Sociology course and as you might imagine, they are issues that provoke much debate and disagreement! If you are interested in the wider debates and arguments that the above issues raise, such as how your social class, ethnicity and gender can have a significant impact on your chances of success in our society, then sociology may be the subject for you.
Sociology at Newman is an extremely inclusive subject, taught in a friendly and inspirational environment in a manner that facilitates success. We encourage you to express your opinions (on all societal issues) in a mature and understanding way, and we hope that after studying Sociology you will leave with a well-informed appreciation of how different social groups exist side by side in our increasingly multi-cultural society.

The A-Level Sociology programme at Cardinal Newman is assessed by the AQA exam board. They are a well-respected provider of academic qualifications in the UK. The AQA Sociology syllabus ensures that students are well-prepared for both higher education and career opportunities.
To enrol on the Sociology A-Level course, you’ll need at least five GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including a minimum of grade 4 in English Language.
At Cardinal Newman, we have a Mixed Programme some students decide to pursue. This allows you to combine A-Levels with BTEC qualifications. Even if you’re not on track to achieve all five grade 5s, you can still consider this alternative.
SINC Society (Sociology in the Newman Community) organises regular fundraising events and enriching activities such as this year's Marxism debate. Trips include Shrewsbury Prison and Lancaster Castle. We have regular guest speakers from a range of universities and organisations including the University of Leeds and UCLAN.
