What is Computer Science
A-Level?

Our Computer Science A-Level is a pivotal course that prepares students for the rapidly growing and influential field of technology.

With a forecast that 74% of STEM jobs in the next few years will be in computer science, this course is essential for those looking to enter high-demand sectors like programming, systems analysis, and game design. The curriculum provides a solid foundation in creating programs from scratch, catering to those who have a passion for problem-solving and innovation, particularly in gaming and beyond.

This course not only equips students with technical skills, but also with the ability to think critically and creatively in developing solutions to complex challenges.

What Will I Study in Computer Science A-Level?

In the Computer Science A-Level course, you’ll start with an engaging year-long project, where you can create a program such as a Unity Game, VR system, App, or a Robotics interface.

This practical application complements your learning of the C# Programming Language and game design using MonoGame.

The theoretical components of the course cover essential topics in computer science, including:

  • Programming fundamentals
  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Computation theories and data representation
  • System architecture and computer organisation
  • Impacts of computing, communication, networking, and databases
  • Explorations into Big Data and functional programming

What Next after Computer Science A-Level?

After completing their A-Level Computer Science programme, many of our students progress to higher education, pursuing degrees in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Games Development. These courses provide a deep dive into the technical and creative aspects of the field.

Alternatively, some students opt for degree apprenticeships, combining work with study, or directly enter the technology industry. Such paths provide practical experience and a faster transition into professional roles, catering to numerous career aspirations in the fast-evolving tech landscape.

What is the Exam Board for Computer Science A-Level?

The AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) is the exam board for our A-Level Computer Science course. They are responsible for setting the syllabus and conducting the examinations, making sure standards are met across various aspects of computer science.

What are the Entry Requirements for Computer Science A-Level?

To enrol in the Computer Science A-Level course, students need to have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 5 or above, with a minimum grade of 6 in Maths.

It’s highly recommended that students also pursue Maths or Core Maths alongside this course. We also offer a Mixed Programme that combines A-Levels with BTEC qualifications, providing flexible study options.
