Sleep Out for Shelter

Sleep Out for Shelter

For the second year running, staff and students at Cardinal Newman have taken part in a “Big Sleep Out” to raise awareness and money for homelessness charity Shelter.

Organised by the Newman Against Poverty and the Equality and Diversity Team, with the support of Shelter, six staff and 20 students spent the night in the college grounds!

Students arrived at 7.30pm, sleeping bags in hand. A representative from Shelter also joined the group to talk about the work that the charity does, and how the funds raised would be spent in supporting local homeless people. They also talked about housing rights and the issues within the current law, which the charity are campaigning against.

Students were then able to take part in a range of activities, relating to the current pressures of affording to run a household, particularly with the current cost of living crisis.

The group then spent the night under the stars in the college grounds, for what was a very chilly night. Despite the low temperatures, everyone made it through the whole night outside – an amazing effort, for which we as a college are extremely proud. The students found it a really important experience, which helped them to learn a great deal about the plight of many people across the country.

The event raised an amazing £2520, smashing their target of matching the £1,700 raised by the event last year! Congratulations to all involved!
