Champions
Our teams have continued to excel this season with our academy sides asserting their dominance in football, basketball and netball.
We have also had plenty of reason to celebrate both team and individual successes across a wide range of other sports including hockey, girls’ football, and cross country, to name just a few.
Football Centre of Excellence
Following their promotion last season, our Football Centre of Excellence side had another phenomenal campaign which saw them crowned the North West Premier League Champions.
The team will now progress to the English Colleges’ Football Association (ECFA) National Play Offs; where they will compete against the top teams from across the country. They have progressed to the semi finals of the competition, after beating Worcester College at home 3-0. Alongside their league success, the team have progressed well in the British Colleges’ National Knockout Cup where they reached the quarter finals and won the North West British Colleges’ Cup with a 2-0 win over Aquinas College in the regional final.
The Centre of Excellence second team are also enjoying another fantastic season. They are currently second in the league and can still win the title with victory in their final league game. Their latest victory came away to Walford & North Shropshire College 5-1. Their form is particularly good news for the Centre of Excellence as the team is comprised mainly of first year students who will prove valuable to the squad next season.
Congratulations to Danny Horton (Archbishop Temple), Martin Middlehurst (Darwen Vale), Sam Nightingale (Christ the King), Rory Winters (Corpus Christi), Lewis Treacy (St Cecilia’s) Dan Walmsley (Longridge), Jake Craven (Longridge), Chris Openshaw (Baines), Harry Dunn (Broughton), James Morley (Ashton), Rob Roach (Corpus Christi), Adam Stammers (All Hallows), Kevin Nelson (Ashton), Connor Lucas (Our Lady’s) Jack Needham (Carr Hill) who have featured prominently in matches this season.

She said: “I have been part of the Preston Harriers for 4 years and I usually train between 5-6 times a week. The team and I were thrilled at gaining first position, it was really exciting for me especially as it was my first experience of competing at the National Finals and to come back with a Gold medal was brilliant!”

Kickin’ It
Girls’ football continues thrive at the College. Last year saw the formation of Newman’s first ever girls’ side and this year’s team has continued to build on their predecessors success.
The girls’ tireless efforts have been reflected by their achievements on the pitch. A few highlights from this season have included finishing runners up in the North West league; reaching the semi finals of the North West Cup (only being defeated by the eventual cup winners); only conceding one defeat in the final four months of the season, with only two throughout the rest of their campaign; and managing to notch up double figure victories against both Blackburn College and Warrington College.
Coach, Becky Thompson said: “The girls’ efforts and achievements this year have been amazing! I have watched them develop massively in their belief and support of each other; their technical ability and teamwork has been immense and is the reasoning behind their success this year. Next season we will be looking to carry on the brilliant momentum of this season and further our status nationally.”

Andy, who won the competition, is also a part of the Great Britain under 18s rock climbing team and has held the title of the North West champion for the last three years.
In the girls’ event, Sophia Gorton (Archbishop Temple) also claimed first place, finishing well ahead of the other competitors.

Basketball Tour the
US! Newman’s
successful Basketball
Academy are getting set to embark upon an eagerly awaited
U.S.A tour. The 11 academy players and two
members of staff will watch and experience
World Class Basketball when they take a trip
to Boston. Students have also arranged to visit
ex-Newman academy ace and England International
star, Ben Eaves who has now progressed to play
for the Huskies at the University of Connecticut. The
tour is set to provide them with a taste of
basketball, USA – style and enable
them to discover what it takes to become an
NBA player and how players secure a scholarship
in top US Universities.
Newman’s
academy will arrive in Boston on Saturday
13th February
and will then travel
to see Ben in Connecticut for a Newman team
meal. The tour will then consist of enrichment
activities, seminars and the opportunity to
talk to professional coaches.
One
of the major highlights of the tour will
be watching The
National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) game Uconn Vs Syacuse, at
which a special award ceremony will be taking
place. 13 former Uconn players are now playing
for the NBA and will be honoured
at the half time break along with Head coach,
Jim Calhoun. Two other games have also been
arranged, an NCAA game - Providence Vs Cincinnati
and NBA game – Boston Celtics versus
Miami Heat! Recent Basketball Results:

December
Newman rise above
the rest!
Sport has always been successful at Newman
but the results so far prove that we are simply
unbeatable. The Netball Academy, Basketball
Academy and Hockey teams are all top of the
North West Sports Tables and are a force to
be reckoned with for 2007.
The recent results are as follows;
Newman’s
Basketball Academy beat Edge Hill
University 65-59, whilst our Under 19’s
Football Academy secured a 7-4 win over Burnley
College. Blackpool College The held the Under
17’s to a 3-3 draw at Blackpool College.
Our
Netball Academy and Hockey
Team had outstanding wins this season.
The Netball first team beat
John Rigby College by a massive 93 gaols to
9 and the Hockey team beat St Mary’s
College, Blackburn 11-0!
The Football Teams were
also in action against St Mary’s.
The first team won 1-0 but unfortunately the
second team encountered their
first defeat his season.
December
Girls Allowed!
This term, Newman
produced a girls’ football team and despite
only being together for a few months, performed
creditably in the Lancashire tournament. The
team narrowly missed out on a quarter final
place at the competition held at the JJB stadium
in Wigan. The girls did however, produce a
great interest in the sport and now train every
week. They are determined to be just as successful
as previous Newman Girls Football Teams. This
is a great opportunity for girls who are interested
in developing or learning new football skills.
Several team members bring extra experience
to the team as they also represent teams outside
the college such as PNE girls.
Saturday 17th September
Newman’s Netball
Academy is celebrating after three of its members
were
selected for England Netball talent squad.
Verity Collins, Jo Walker and Fran
Marshall all attended trials at the Sheffield
English Institute of Sport on the 16th and 17th of September and secured places
on the Talent 1 and 2 squad. The talented trio’s
performance wowed the England selectors and
all three girls will now attend England Home
Training
for Under 17’s and Under
19’s every month.
The news adds to the view
that Newman’s netball
teams will achieve great things this year.
Head Coach, Ursula Pennington
who has coached the academy for 6 years said: “I
am delighted at the news and I think it’s great to be working with
the girls who are all valuable members of our first team squad.”
"I
am extremely confident that we will keep to the tradition that we have
set here at Newman and achieve National success this year.”
Goal
Shooter Rachael Bramhall, who is in her second year at Newman and who
last year was also selected for the British Colleges Team, said: “The
training and guidance I have been given at Newman has helped me to
develop my skills and I am convinced that we all be crowned champions
this year.”

Netball Teams Start New
Year with Good News!
The Netball Team at Cardinal Newman College
became County Champions last term, and are
now representing the County at the Regional
Championships this Saturday!
The New Year brought
even more good news.
 |
 |
 |
| Rachael Bramhall, Maria
McCann & Sara Parkinson |
 |
Three of the Netball Academy
have been selected for the British Colleges
trials at Loughborough
University later this term – and if selected
will have the opportunity to play in Malta.
Sara Parkinson (from St Michael’s, Chorley)
is no stranger to international honours, as
she toured New Zealand with the British Colleges’ team
last summer. Maria McCann (who came to us from
All Hallows, Penwortham) and Rachael Bramhall
(from Highfield High School, Blackpool) are
the other two talented netball players who
have been invited to the trial.
News of this
opportunity is welcome, but not surprising.
Apart from playing in competitions
against other colleges and school sixth forms,
the 5 Newman College teams also play in other
local competitions. They are currently unbeaten
in the Leyland Premier League – and obviously
top the league!
New Year gets off to a

The first fixtures of the New Year saw College
teams continuing the winning streak that they
demonstrated last year!

College Trio Scoop England
Places!
Sports
staff at Cardinal Newman College were ecstatic
this week with
news that 3 of the Football Centre of Excellence
team have been selected for the English Colleges’ Squad
to play against Italy in February. The talented trio are
Alex Butler - who also captains the College
team (and who joined the College from Hutton
Grammar School), Michael Barnes (from Southlands
High School in Chorley), and Daren Green
(from Fulwood High School).
Being selected for
the English squad is, to say the least, difficult.
The squad is only 18 strong, yet can draw
on players from across all the colleges in
England!
Sean Haselgrave (the
College’s coach – as well as
being team coach for the English Colleges)
said:
"Hundreds if not thousands of very talented football players are
all keen to get into the national squad, competition is very fierce and selecting
the squad is not an easy job. The selection panel is made up of 5 coaches, often
with professional experience, and based in colleges from Gateshead to Bristol,
York, Preston, and Berkshire.”
The comments on the
3 students from Lancashire were, to say the
least, complimentary. Darren Green was described
as “the best link centre forward
of his age in Britain”, whilst
Alex Butler was "an astute reader
of the game who knows the right place to
be, and is always there". Michael
Barnes (a Manchester United Youth player)
had even greater praise “the
jewel in the crown” – hardly
surprising then that he was pencilled into
the squad after playing for only 5 minutes!
"I’m
thrilled for the lads” said
Sean, “they are all very
talented players who have worked hard and
give their all for the team. I am really
looking forward to working with them in
the England squad as well as at College.
Our first International match could hardly
be bigger, Italy do have something of a
reputation in football!”
The College is used
to sporting success – college sports
teams currently Lancashire top league positions
in various sports, and the Netball Centre
of Excellence are – again – Lancashire
Champions, and will now go on to represent
Lancashire in the National Championships.
But even judged by recent successes, the

The new Ryan Giggs?
Cardinal
Newman College student Michael Barnes has
been invited for a trial at Manchester
United!
The talented student who
came to Newman from Southlands High School
in Chorley plays
on
the wing for Newman’s Centre of Excellence.
He also plays for the Lancashire under 19 team,
as well as playing for Lancaster City first
team and their Youth team. It was whilst playing
for the Youth team in the FA youth cup that
he was spotted by a scout from Manchester United.
Michael was invited to visit the Manchester
club’s training ground last week, and
at the end of that was invited to attend for
a full week of training with the teams that
play for Manchester United – with the
possibility of being asked to carry on for
a further 5 weeks, and the possibility of a
contract at the end of that time.
Newman’s
football Centre of Excellence is used to success.
As well as being supported
by the Football Association (the only college
in the area to have such support), Newman have
been National Champions twice over the past
5 years – hardly surprising that their
coach (Sean Haselgrove) has just been invited
to be the coach for the British College’s
under 19 team – due to play in Italy
next year!
